To mark the 90th anniversary of the victory of the Red Army's Long March, the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP) released typical procuratorial public interest litigation cases on protecting Long March-related cultural heritage on Oct 10.

The cases focus on safeguarding Long March-related cultural heritage, including revolutionary sites, battle relics, Red slogans, and scattered martyrs' tombs. These cases serve as examples to guide procuratorial organs nationwide in handling cultural heritage protection cases with high quality and efficiency.

To promote the preservation and inheritance of Long March-related culture, the SPP launched a special public interest litigation supervision campaign in early 2026. Procuratorial organs in 15 provincial-level regions along the Long March route have filed 434 cases, conducted 76 consultations, issued 326 procuratorial recommendations, and initiated 10 lawsuits. They have urged the protection of 499 Long March-related cultural relics and 477 Long March revolutionary memorial facilities, achieving fruitful results.

Long March-related cultural heritage features numerous sites stretching across vast areas. To tackle protection challenges such as cross-administrative jurisdiction and scattered relic sites, procuratorial organs have used consultation and procuratorial recommendations to promote targeted rectification of similar problems.

In handling cases, procuratorial organs have carried out continuous follow-up supervision to ensure effective protection. Where procuratorial recommendations have not resulted in adequate rectification, public interest litigation has been initiated to safeguard the safety and integrity of Long March-related cultural relics through "confirmation by litigation".

The release also included cases involving illegal construction within the protection scope of Long March revolutionary cultural relics and the construction control zones, which posed safety hazards and risks of damage to the historical landscape.

Furthermore, procuratorial organs have attached great importance to, and have actively promoted, the revitalization and utilization of Long March-related cultural heritage during case handling.

The head of the SPP's Public Interest Litigation Procuratorial Department said that, looking ahead, procuratorial organs will further leverage the role of procuratorial public interest litigation, carry out supervision with resolve and expertise, translate institutional strengths into tangible governance outcomes for cultural heritage protection, and advance this work to new heights.
