The 19th China Information Accessibility Forum, themed "Technology Empowers Accessibility," was held in Beijing on Dec 23, alongside a national exhibition and promotional event on achievements in barrier-free environment construction.
Zhang Xueqiao, Deputy Prosecutor General of the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP), attended and delivered a speech at the event.
Zhang noted that since the implementation of the Law on Building Accessible Environments, procuratorates at all levels across the country have lawfully fulfilled their statutory duty of public interest litigation prosecution, handling more than 8,000 such cases related to barrier-free environment construction. These efforts have provided judicial safeguards for addressing the real-life needs of groups such as people with disabilities and the elderly, ensuring their equal, full, and convenient participation in and integration into social life.
He highlighted that, in response to the digital divide arising from digital technologies and the online society, procuratorial organs, acting on their public interest litigation functions, have taken targeted measures to tackle accessibility challenges in technological applications, turning science and technology into a "booster" for vulnerable groups, including disabled people and the elderly, to participate in social life.
Zhang added that the SPP has strengthened collaboration with organizations such as the China Disabled Persons' Federation and the China Association of Volunteers for Persons with Disabilities. Together, they established the "Yixin Weigong" (“Public Interest from the Heart”) volunteer service system for disability assistance. Through volunteer participation, support, and oversight, case handling supervision has become more precise and standardized, better meeting the diverse needs of various disabled groups.
Zhang emphasized that procuratorates will continue to strengthen collaboration with disabled persons' federations at all levels, contributing to the improvement of the barrier-free environment system through the rule of law. They will deepen and solidify such services through high-quality performance of their duties, bringing tangible benefits to the people.
