From May 25 to 30, the Procuratorial Department for Economic Crime of the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP) and the Bureau of Law Enforcement and Inspection of the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) organized a training workshop on handling cases regarding food safety violations in Kunming, Southwest China's Yunnan province.

More than 120 professionals from the procuratorial departments for economic crime of the procuratorates as well as from law enforcement and inspection units of the market regulation authorities nationwide participated in the training.

This marks the second time that the SPP and the SAMR have co-organized such a workshop. In 2024, in an effort to enhance the transference between administrative law enforcement and criminal justice and to improve the efficiency of handling cases regarding food safety violations, they held their first joint training workshop.

Focusing on the prominent issues in food safety that are of widespread public concern, the SPP and the SAMR have taken a series of measures to address challenges in law enforcement and judicial practices in the field.

The measures include formulating and amending relevant judicial interpretations and improving methods in the transference of administrative law enforcement and criminal justice, actively advancing a three-year special campaign on cracking down on the prohibited use of drugs, controlling pesticide residues, and enhancing quality and safety of edible agricultural products, cracking down on food safety violations in accordance with the law, rigorously investigating cases regarding food safety violations and punishing those involved, releasing typical cases, and actively implementing industry bans and lifetime employment prohibitions for individuals convicted of food-related crimes.

This training workshop aimed to enhance the coordination mechanism in the field of food safety and improve the professional competence and law enforcement capabilities of food regulators and prosecutors. The training covered various aspects such as practical issues and challenges in handling cases of food safety violations, law enforcement techniques, legal interpretations, evidence review skills, and more.

The workshop featured lectures from renowned scholars on the administrative penalties law, the criminal law, the criminal procedure law, as well as experts from courts, procuratorates, public security organs, and market regulation departments addressing key issues in administrative law enforcement and criminal justice related to food safety violations. Additionally, a special on-site session on food safety inspection was arranged during the workshop.
