SPP holds open day event to mark 5th anniversary of Civil Code promulgation

On May 16, the Supreme People's Procuratorate holds its 47th open day event themed on implementing the Civil Code to safeguard a good life.

To mark the 5th anniversary of the promulgation of the Civil Code, the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP) held its 47th open day event on May 16, themed on implementing the Civil Code to safeguard a good life, to allow the public to take a close look at how procuratorial organs implement the Civil Code in practice and to share stories of prosecutors safeguarding the rights and interests of the people.

Ying Yong, Secretary of the Party Leadership Group and Prosecutor General of the SPP, held a symposium with the deputies to the National People's Congress and members of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference attending the event.

Tong Jianming, Deputy Secretary of the Party Leadership Group and First Deputy Prosecutor General of the SPP, delivered a welcome speech and released the fourth batch of typical cases demonstrating the practice of procuratorial organs in implementing the Civil Code. Gong Ming, a member of the Party Leadership Group and Deputy Prosecutor General of the SPP, was also present at the event.

The Civil Code is a foundational law that consolidates governance foundations, meets public expectations, and brings long-term benefits to the people, serving as an "encyclopedia of social life" and a declaration and safeguard of civil rights, said Tong in his address.

Over the past five years, procuratorial organs have continuously regarded the implementation of the Civil Code as a major political responsibility and a statutory duty, and conscientiously integrated the spirit of the Civil Code into the entire process of performing their duties in fulfilling the "four major procuratorial functions" and handling cases, he said.

Procuratorial organs have strengthened supervision over civil proceedings in accordance with the law, worked with courts to improve the mechanism of handling the cases involving procuratorial recommendations for retrial of civil cases, and made collaborative efforts to enhance the regular mechanisms for punishing and preventing false litigation, Tong added.

Tong also highlighted the efforts of procuratorial organs in strengthening supervision over the termination of civil enforcement procedures, promoting legal knowledge and ensuring people live a better life under the rule of law.

He noted that the implementation of the Civil Code is a systematic project and a long-term task requiring collective efforts from the entire society The procuratorial organs will continue to deepen practical cooperation with law schools and research institutions, consciously integrate the spirit, fundamental principles, and relevant rules of the Civil Code into various aspects of procuratorial work, fully implement the Civil Code, and fulfill the legal supervision responsibilities in accordance with the law, in a bid to ensure the unified and correct implementation of the Civil Code, and effectively safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of the people.

During the open day event, six typical cases illustrating the implementation of the Civil Code were released. Five prosecutors shared their case-handling stories demonstrating the procuratorial organs' dedication to implementing the Civil Code.

Deputies to the National People's Congress, members of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, legal experts and scholars in civil and commercial law, as well as faculty members and students of the School of Law at Peking University, Tsinghua University, and China University of Political Science and Law attend the open day event.

More than 40 faculty members and students from Peking University, Tsinghua University, and China University of Political Science and Law, along with legal experts and scholars in civil and commercial law, and community representatives, attended the open day event.

Procuratorates at all levels across the country are holding open day events throughout the month under the same theme of implementing the Civil Code to safeguard a good life.
