Ying Yong, Chief Grand Prosecutor and Prosecutor General of the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP), met with a delegation led by Chan Tsz King, Prosecutor General of the Public Prosecutions Office of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), in Beijing on April 22.
Welcoming Chan and his delegation, Ying said that, since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), the CPC Central Committee, with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core, has placed great importance to Macao's development and the wellbeing of its people. Under the CPC's leadership, the SAR has achieved remarkable milestones in the practice of "one country, two systems" with Macao characteristics through a series of significant decisions and plans, Ying said.
Ying highlighted President Xi's inspection of Macao in December last year on the 25th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland. He said Xi’s important speeches during the inspection have chartered the course and laid down fundamental principles for the sustained and steady progress in the practice of "one country, two systems" in the new era.
Noting that the rule of law is a vital cornerstone for the prosperity and stability of Macao, Ying said the Public Prosecutions Office of Macao has resolutely upheld national sovereignty, security and development interests, and firmly safeguarded the constitutional order established by the country's Constitution and the Basic Law of the Macao SAR.
He commended the Public Prosecutions Office of Macao for its fulfillment of procuratorial functions in combating criminal activities, supervising law enforcement, and protecting citizens' rights and interests, saying that it has made significant contributions to the long-term prosperity and stability of Macao.
Ying said the SPP has always attached great importance to cooperation with the Public Prosecutions Office of Macao and supports its foreign exchanges under the framework of "one country, two systems".
He added that the SPP supports the office in playing an active role through multilateral and bilateral platforms such as the China-ASEAN Prosecutors-General Conference and the International Association of Prosecutors, demonstrating the significant advantages of the "one country, two systems" policy.
Reiterating the SPP's commitment to upholding the "one country, two systems" principle, Ying said the SPP will further strengthen practical cooperation with the Public Prosecutions Office of Macao in areas such as combating transnational crimes, personnel exchanges and training, and digital prosecution. These joint efforts aim to support the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, and to provide strong legal safeguards for the high-quality social and economic development of both the mainland and Macao, he added.
Chan thanked Ying for the meeting, and briefed him on the work of the Public Prosecutions Office of Macao in safeguarding national security and social stability as well as serving the high-quality social and economic development of the region.
He reaffirmed his office's firm commitment to the principles of "one country, two systems" and "patriots administering Macao".
Chan added that his office will continue to perform its duties in accordance with the law and the spirit of the rule of law, develop a professional, dedicated and ethical procuratorial team, and further strengthen cooperation with procuratorial authorities on the mainland in jointly combating cross-border crimes such as corruption, money laundering and telecom and cyber fraud, in a bid to create a better legal environment for Macao's integration into the country's overall development.
Tong Jianming, Class I Grand Prosecutor and First Deputy Prosecutor General of the SPP, attended the meeting.
