Gong Ming, Deputy Prosecutor General of the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP) of China, met with a delegation led by Ethiopia's State Minister of Justice Belayihun Yirga in Beijing on July 23.
Gong extended a warm welcome to the delegation and said that the scope and achievements of China-Ethiopia cooperation have been at the forefront of China's collaboration with African countries over the past decade since the proposal of the Belt and Road Initiative.
He noted that the judicial and procuratorial authorities of both countries have maintained close ties over the years, with the two sides having signed a memorandum of understanding for cooperation and Ethiopia's Office of Federal Attorney General officially joining the mechanism of the Meeting of the Heads of Prosecution Services of the BRICS Countries earlier this year.
China's SPP is willing to deepen and expand pragmatic cooperation with the law enforcement and judicial authorities of Ethiopia to foster a better legal environment for high-quality development in both countries, he added.
Gong also briefed the delegation on China's procuratorial system and its key initiatives. He noted that China's procuratorial organs are actively promoting the comprehensive and coordinated development of the four major procuratorial functions of criminal, civil, administrative and public interest litigation, with the fundamental principle of "handling each case with high quality and efficiency" running throughout the entire process. They adhere to the principles of integrated, comprehensive and proactive fulfillment of their duties to ensure uniform and correct implementation of the country's laws, he added.
Currently, the SPP is making plans on further deepening the procuratorial system reform in line with the guiding principles of the just-concluded third plenary session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, and working to accelerate the modernization of prosecutorial work, so as to better support and serve Chinese modernization, Gong said.
Belayihun expressed gratitude for the meeting, saying that Ethiopia hopes to learn from the experiences of procuratorial organs in China.
He also expressed the hope to strengthen cooperation with China in criminal justice assistance and areas such as combating transnational crime and the training of procuratorial officers.
