Tong Jianming, Deputy Secretary of the Party Leadership Group and First Deputy Prosecutor General of the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP), led a delegation to attend the 57th Executive Committee Meeting of the International Association of Prosecutors (IAP) held in the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) from April 17 to 19.

The meeting, hosted by the Public Prosecutions Office of the Macao SAR, was attended by 30 members of the IAP Executive Committee from 25 countries and regions, as well as officials from the IAP Secretariat.

Tong delivered a welcome speech on behalf of the SPP at the opening ceremony. He emphasized that under the strong leadership of the central government, the Macao SAR has achieved leapfrog development and continuous improvement in residents' lives, while maintaining social stability and harmony by adhering to the principles of "one country, two systems" and "Macao people governing Macao" with a high degree of autonomy.

The Macao SAR has become one of the most open and economically vibrant regions in China, playing an important strategic role in the country's overall development, he added.

Tong pointed out that under the leadership of Prosecutor General Ip Son Sang, the Public Prosecutions Office of Macao has actively fulfilled its prosecutorial duties, providing high-quality legal services and judicial guarantees for the prosperous development of Macao and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Noting that the prosecutorial system in the Macao SAR integrates both Eastern and Western legal cultures and possesses distinctive characteristics and advantages, Tong expressed the hope that participants of the meeting would fully appreciate the historical culture and unique charm of Macao.

The meeting was co-chaired by IAP Vice-President Manuel Pinheiro Freitas, who is also Prosecutor General of the State of Ceará, Brazil, and IAP Secretary General Roel Dona. The meeting participants reviewed the Secretariat's work report, reports from various IAP specialized committees, and adopted proposals regarding the election of additional Executive Committee members, nominations for annual IAP awards as well as upcoming major IAP events. The meeting successfully completed all agenda.

Prior to the meeting, Tong held meetings with Chief Executive of the Macao SAR Ho Iat Seng, Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao SAR Zheng Xincong, and Prosecutor General of the Public Prosecutions Office of the Macao SAR Ip Son Sang.

Tong also visited the Public Prosecutions Office of Macao. He expressed his commitment to continuing promoting exchanges between the procuratorial organs of the mainland and Macao, conducting closer cooperation in combating cross-border crime, criminal judicial assistance and digital prosecution, and supporting the transformation of the Public Prosecutions Office into a platform for prosecutorial cooperation among Portuguese-speaking countries and regions, in order to jointly promote the steady and sustained progress of "one country, two systems" in Macao.
