On April 15, the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP) convened a mobilization meeting to deploy the work for the special case of public interest litigation on water environment governance in the Pearl River Basin.
Zhang Xueqiao, Deputy Prosecutor General of the SPP, attended the meeting and emphasized the importance of taking the opportunity of handling this case to promote cross-regional coordination and inter-departmental collaboration in order to serve and ensure the high-quality development of the Pearl River Basin and the national strategy of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
On April 3, the SPP decided to file a case regarding the water environment governance issue in the Pearl River Basin, and established a special task force. The task force is headed by a grand prosecutor, with subgroups established in seven provincial-level procuratorates, namely, Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi, Guangdong, Hunan, Jiangxi, and Fujian, to jointly advance the handling of the case.
It was underscored at the meeting that efforts should be focused on key areas, such as mining pollution, urban and rural water pollution, agricultural farming pollution, vessel pollution, soil and water conservation, ecological regulation, and the mismanagement of rivers and lakes.
The meeting called for drawing successful experiences from cases such as the Wanfeng Lake case, the Nansi Lake case, and the case for vessel pollution governance in the Yangtze River, unifying case handling standards and work pace, identifying key stages in case handling, and ensuring the successful handling of a series of influential cases.
