The Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP) released 10 typical cases of procuratorial public interest litigation on the protection of consumer rights on March 15, World Consumer Rights Day, aiming to effectively improve the quality and efficiency of public interest litigation concerning food and drug safety and better safeguard consumers' legitimate rights and interests.
The cases concentrate on addressing food and drug safety issues that draw wide public attention and inflict negative consequences, as well as new problems arising with items sold in new business forms. Through the release of the cases, the SPP intends to urge administrative agencies to strengthen supervision over multichannel network (MCN) agencies in accordance with the law, regulate the release of video advertisements by social media, to protect the right of consumers to be informed and maintain the safety of online food consumption. The cases also expose illegal practices that trouble the common people, such as the illegal use of "freshness lights", a special lighting that makes food look appealing, and the illegal sale of overseas drugs.
Procuratorial organs will carry out a series of major public interest litigations related to food and drug safety that are of great concern to consumers, such as pushing for the standardized development of prefabricated food businesses and the rectification of food adulteration, the overuse of food additives, and drug abuse so as to effectively safeguard the health and safety of the people.
